Waterproofing Systems
Waterproofing- Guide Specification
Since production first began in the mid 1960’s, Hot Rubberized Asphalt has been the system of choice for horizontal waterproofing. The elasticity of RS Base, its tenacious bond to the substrate, self-healing properties and seamless application all combine to form an extremely reliable system. These are all important factors when choosing a membrane as the cost of repair or replacement can easily reach ten times that of a roofing application. Once installed asphalt paving, cast in place concrete, pavers, interlocking brick or landscaping can be placed over the system. The ability of RS Base to bond just as well to vertical surfaces as to horizontal means elevation changes, planter boxes, ramps etc., can be waterproofed align with the field while still maintaining a truly monolithic system. Asphalt Paving
Asphalt Paving can be placed directly over the RS Protection Course. Paving vehicles can be driven directly on RS Protection Course provided the operators exercise normal care and caution.
Landscaping
Landscaping can be placed directly over the completed membrane system. The types of soil and plants to be installed are governed by such factors as depth of soil, drainage or water retention required to promote healthy growth, load restrictions on the structural deck etc. There are many components which can be added or removed from the system beneath the landscaping to customize the assembly to the site specific conditions.
Concrete Pavers or Interlocking Brick
Terraces, patios, walkways etc. can be created using a number of different options. Entire decks can be done this way or these areas can be installed into the landscaped areas. Insulation and RS Drainage Course can be placed in the assembly if going over a heated space.
Poured Concrete
In split slab construction, concrete can be placed directly over the RS Protection Course. This allows the mud slab or suspended structural slab to be waterproofed to protect the rebar from moisture and chloride penetration. Concrete bonds quite well to the sanded surface RS Protection Course.
RS Drainage Course
RS Drainage Course is high density polyethylene dimpled sheet with a polypropylene filter fabric adhered to one side. This provides a clear place for drainage between the RS Base waterproofing membrane and the balance of the assembly.
DOW Roofmate
The insulation used in all Roofsaver Protected Membrane Assemblies is Dow Roofmate. It is Type 4 Extruded Polystyrene board which comes in a variety of R-values. The edges are ship-lapped to minimize gaps between boards while remaining fast and easy to install. The boards are dimensionally stable and when installed properly will maintain their R-value for the life of the assembly.
RS Protection Course
RS Protection Course is an SBS modified asphalt roll with fiberglass reinforcement. This provides a tough, flexible membrane that adheres well to the RS Base and conforms well to even the toughest details.
RS Base
RS Base Hot Rubberized Asphalt is a monolithic, self-healing and liquid applied membrane. The membrane is heated at ground level in a specially designed melting kettle and applied to the substrate using a squeegee like applicator. This ensures there are no voids in the membrane system. It is applied in two monolithic costs separated by RS Reinforcing Fabric. Applying the system in this manner provides two truly monolithic layers of protection at all projections and flashing details.
RS Reinforcing Fabric
RS Reinforcing Fabric is spun-bond polyester scrim sheet designed for use with Hot Rubberized Asphalt Systems.
Primer
Primer is an asphalt cutback designed to penetrate the surface of the concrete deck and seal in any dust remaining on the deck after cleaning it. This helps maximize the already tenacious bond of RS Base to the concrete deck.
Concrete Deck
Structural Concrete Decks must be clean, dry and free of frost. New concrete must be sufficiently cured. Cure time can vary considerably depending on temperature, humidity and thickness of the pour. RS Base can be applied to decks cured less than 28 days providing moisture content is below acceptable limits. New concrete should have a wood float finish to maximize adhesion of the membrane.
